Going green this winter

A popular health drink originally from China, green tea has been around for a long time. Initially, green tea was perceived as a weight-loss or slimmer’s tea. But, it wasn’t until three to four years ago that people became more aware of its benefits.
“Green tea, as we all know, is a rich source of effective antioxidants which are much more effective than Vitamin C and Vitamin E in protecting our immune system along with vitamins, minerals, protein and other nutrients. It enhances immunity, helps fight stress and fatigue, improves metabolism and also helps in weight management,” says Dolly Kumar, Director, GAIA.
Available in different flavours, the benefits of green tea have been clubbed with the goodness of lemon, tulsi, mint and ginger. The benefits of this natural product include lowered cholesterol level, controlled blood sugar, increased alertness and energy, relief in case of sore throat or congestion, decreased stress levels, improved immunity, better digestion and even weight loss. Green tea is now also being suggested by dieticians and gym trainers as a pre-workout drink for enhanced endurance and improved stamina required for the workouts. Also, several diet pills contain green tea extracts as a major ingredient along with other diet suppressants.
“However, green tea is no more promoted as a weight-loss drink but as a healthier alternative to the regular cup of milky tea Indians are more accustomed to. It is now increasingly being used as a part of skincare where a number of creams and lotions include green tea as an ingredient for its potent anti-oxidant qualities that reduce the fine lines,” says Kumar. “There are instances where people also use chilled green tea bags as eye packs for a soothing, cooling effect on the tired eyes. Some people also freeze freshly brewed green tea as ice cubes and use them as a toner for better skin elasticity and improved skin.”
As it aids in detoxifying, it keeps the system clean, controls water retention in the body and reduces stomach bloating or heaviness. Green tea provides you with a healthier skin from the inside and outside. Since the toxins get washed away, the blood becomes purer and gives the skin a healthy glow that also slows the ageing process and promotes longevity. In some cases, people experience less skin breakouts and acne after including green tea in their daily routine. The catechins present in it are natural anti-bacterial agents and reduce inflammation. “Recent scientific studies have shown that the anti-bacterial effect of green tea helps in preventing tooth decay and reduces the growth of bacteria that causes bad breath,” Kumar informs.
