Cryolipolysis is the latest weapon in the battle to shed the extra flab, as fat cells are eliminated by employing a targeted cooling process. But diet and exercise are still a must.

First, the good part. A fat-breaking treatment has once again entered the Indian market with the name of Cryolipolysis (Cryo-cold, lipo-fat, lysis-breakdown), which is a Greek medical term implying breaking down of fat through exposure to cold. In most cases, patients will experience an average 20 per cent reduction in fat from the troublesome areas. It is quick, reasonable and requires little recuperation time.

Now, the bad part. Although you will see a tangible difference within the first couple of sittings, you will still need to pay very close attention to your diet and exercise. Without that, Cryolipolysis may not be effective. Post procedure, you will be advised to watch your diet closely. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy products and nuts will form the key components of your diet that will help accelerate the process of sustaining the weight loss. Regular exercise—brisk walking, jogging, dancing, swimming, biking, climbing and other sports are recommended as part of post-operative care—and you will need to follow with utmost dedication.

So how does this technology work? Cryolipolysis uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin by freezing them to the point of elimination. The lipids that are released in this process are progressively eliminated by natural metabolic activities over three months following the procedure. Regular exercise during this period helps to optimise their elimination. Since it only affects fat cells, as they are more sensitive to cold than other cells, it removes fat from unwanted areas easily, without damaging tissues.

Because there are no needles, no scalpels, no injections, no anaesthesia and no drugs involved, there are few after-effects one can talk of. In fact, the procedure is so quick, it can be literally done during your lunch breaks and patients can drive themselves back home or office and resume routine activities. And that’s exactly what Dhrishti Vohra, an artist who had always been struggling with cellulite in all the wrong places, did a month back. “November is a very busy time for us artists. Giving liposuction a run for its money, Cryolipolysis is comparatively safer too. The process itself is quite simple. It begins with marking out the problem area, for example a love handle or a tummy bulge. On the marked area, a gel pad is secured to ensure good contact between the hand piece (the Cryolipolysis machine) and your skin. The cooling is then turned on making the area numb for a while. After a 60- to 120-minute session, you are good to go. The treatment will need a couple or more sessions, per zone, depending on the thickness of the fat deposit, and one can lose up to two inches from problem areas. Immediately after a sitting, some redness and mild bruising may appear over the treated body part, which should go away in a few weeks. For best results, patients are advised to keep a healthy lifestyle in addition to the sessions they undertake.

Starting from `7,000, the cost can vary depending on the area targeted. The technology that was earlier only available in the West, has now been launched in India by NidSun chain of weight loss clinics. Since the clinical trials on over 200 patients in September 2012, 98 per cent of the patients have shown positive results.
