Using a comprehensive therapy, including traction, acupuncture, TDP baking and cupping for lumbar disk prolapsed (LDP), the common cause of lumbago, an effective rate of 87.5 per cent, can be reached. It can alleviate symptoms, including pain, and avoid surgery. Attention has been given to the treatment of LDP in traditional Chinese medical therapy; conservative treatment can bring remission, avoid surgery and reduce the pain of patients. Here’s a study done by Shunqiang, The Healing Department of Huang Slu Municipal Central Hospital, China. The sample included 28 males and 20 females, ranging from 28 to 67-year-old. The duration of the condition varied from two days to 10 years.
Patients experienced lumbago or radiating leg pain on one or both sides, which increased while defecating or coughing and eased when resting. In serious cases, patients found difficulty in walking, experienced scoliosis and tenderness at the prolapse position of the lumbar intervertebral disk and sacral spinal muscle on both sides, radiating to the lower limbs.
Pelvic traction: Using a traction force at 30-50 kg (or the degree the patient could endure, if less) once a day for 30 minutes.
Acupuncture treatment: The acupuncture points used were Ashi point, Shenshu (BL 23), Dachangshu (BL 25), Xiaochangshu (BL 27), Huantiao (GB 30), Yinmen (BL 37), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Chengshan (BL 57), Weizhong (BL 40), Xuanzhong (GB 39). Treatment continued with 6,805 electric needle treating device, for 30 minutes once a day.
TDP baking: Done on the prolapsed parts, once a day, 30 minutes every time.
Cupping: Cupping on the prolapsed parts, once a day, 10 minutes every time.
During the acute stage, patients were asked to lie on hard wood board bed for two weeks. After the pain released, patients did exercises by bending the waist backward to strengthen it.
RESULTS AND EFFECTIVE RATE
Pain and soreness in waist and legs disappeared. The straight leg lifting test reached over 70 degrees; the leg recovered its full function in 30 cases. In 12 cases, patients found relief from pain and soreness of waist. The straight leg lifting test reached 70 degrees. In six cases, pain and soreness in waist and legs decreased, the straight leg lifting improved. The total effective rate was 87.5 per cent.
In the comprehensive therapy, the traction force can expand the lumbar disk compressed due to the protrusion of the nucleus, allowing recovery of the nucleus pulposus. The TDP baking and cupping can improve local blood circulation, removing the pain-causing materials and reducing the degree of pain. Acupuncture therapy can enlarge the blood vein, increase blood flow, remove the edema in the tissues, quicken the metabolism, remove or reduce the inflammation around the nerve roots, reduce the stimulation from pain-causing materials, and enhance the immunity of the patient.
