CHENNAI: Fear gripped commuters when cracks appeared again at the busy Anna Salai on Tuesday, two days after a portion of the road caved in near Gemini flyover.

The cracks appeared for a distance of 10 metres close to the spot where the road had caved in on Sunday.

Traffic in small portions was diverted after the area was cordoned off for an inspection by Metro rail engineers.

"It is a crack. Engineers are drilling to inspect if there is a hollow," said a metro rail spokeswoman. She said that grouting will be done on Tuesday night.

The area will be open for traffic post the inspection, the spokeswoman added. The incident affected traffic, and huge traffic snarls were reported along the stretch.

On Sunday, the road in Anna Salai caved in suddenly taking along an MTC bus and a car, which were later pulled out by a crane.

While there were passengers in both vehicles, no casualties were reported.
