The Crystalline State of Mind

When you keep a red cloth beneath a clear white quartz crystal, it appears red. If it is a blue cloth, it appears blue. When with practice of different methods of meditation and yoga, the mind also becomes like a crystal, then the pure unadulterated nature of an individual which is like the coloured cloth beneath the crystal expresses through the personality.

Though the ultimate achievement of yoga is not possible with this purification of the three basic natures of our being—Sattva or the steady state of purity and goodness; Rajas or a dynamic state of consciousness; and Tamas or an inert and dull state which does not apprehend reality—the one who is on the path of yoga moves on from Tamas to Sattva. In the ultimately pure state of mind, there is unadulterated Sattva Guna which does not get polluted by Rajas or Tamas and shines through a crystalline consciousness.

There is a point of time during the sadhana, or spiritual practices, when all the thoughts that kept rising like incessant waves on the ocean of consciousness ebb out. In that state of pure tranquility, the mind becomes like a pure crystal which simply reflects the colours of objects that surround it.

In this state of Samadhi, the one who is trying to comprehend an object of meditation, the process and means of comprehension and the object of comprehension dissolves its difference and everything just remains a unified field of consciousness—one without a second. The meditator is the individual intellect. The sense organs of perception and locomotion are the ones through which we contact the world outside which are basically just five things—sound, sight, smell, touch and taste.

The mind in its purest state is simply consciousness. It is a state of knowing or an awareness of anything and everything that comes in its purview. When there is only awareness and no attraction, hatred or reaction to the object of awareness, the mind is in its pure state like a clear crystal. In such a state, whatever that passes by—anger, hatred, jealousy, desire, delusion, arrogance—will reflect in such a mind. That too will pass away and the natural state is left as it is.

A person who is living in such a state of mind can seem to get angry, irritated, jealous, hateful or spiteful, but these are not his innate qualities. When people with such qualities come around such a person, it may seem to have a real existence. This is the reason why people go to self-realised beings for fulfilment of their desires. When you approach such a person with a strong desire or prayer, since their consciousness is very pure by itself, not adulterated with personal desires, the wish of the one who approaches reflects in that and gets strengthened by the purity. It reaches its ultimate abode of fulfilment.
