We always go through troubled situations. Sometimes we may have people we know around us for help. Sometimes,  totally unknown persons may help us. There may be those difficult times when there is no human help available. It is during such times we go looking for  a supernatural power to ask for help. Mantras are such powers that can help us tide through any crisis with ease. The word of Guru and the chants of the Guru Gita are such potent mantras, says Lord Shiva.

The very mention of the two syllables ‘Guru’ can destroy the fear of death and its agents which are sickness, hard times, old age and other problems. It destroys all difficulties. It frees us from fears from the demons, ghosts and destructive beings, from thieves and wild animals.

By chanting the name of the Guru and applying the sacred ash, there is a subtle power that can destroy even the greatest of diseases. It is also a protection from black magic, hypnotism and other mind-bending methods of destruction.

The effects of various seats on which the practitioner is seated to chant the mantra is mentioned; when chanted on a seat of cloth there is poverty. When chanted seated on a stone, it becomes the cause for disease. When the repetition of names is done seated on the earth, one gets sorrow and on wood, there is no effect for the chanting.

Contrarily there is attainment of knowledge and liberation of the mind when chanted seated on certain skins. One attains wisdom when he chants seated on a mat of kusha or darbha grass, and on a woollen blanket, one becomes adept at everything. Lord Shiva gives the techniques of meditation seated either on kusha mats or on white blankets.

The use of different colours and their effects on the mind is also mentioned. One who wants peace should meditate on white. One who wants to attract others should use red and black is used for destructive activities. Yellow is used to attract wealth.

One who desires peace should meditate facing the north and one who wishes to attract people should chant facing the east.  Those who indulge in an destructive activity face the south and towards the west if the idea is to acquire wealth. However, chanting the name of the Guru alone one appears charming to all beings and is also liberated of the limitations of the mind. They become dear to the gods, kings and to the whole world at large.

The power of the Guru mantra makes them powerful to have control over all beings and there is a growth of all good qualities. They have the power to destroy evil and enthuse those who do good. They attain the impossible and remove the fear caused by the nine planetary forces.
