It was a family reunion that took me to the backwaters of God’s own country. Sailing through the Kumarakom backwaters on a boathouse is sure to rejuvenate any sullen soul.
The elegant kettuvallam (boathouse) had two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a kitchen and a spacious portico. Sitting at the portico with the breeze enveloping your face is sure to mesmerize you. Sitting at one of the corners, unseen from the cynical eyes of probing aunts, I allowed the flowing waters to touch my feet. The experience of cold, clear water feels relaxing, as it takes your mind away from the daily stress. If you notice closely, you can find some curious pisces trying to compete with the boat.
We watched a flock of ducks competing with a small boat that was bringing our lunch along with the popular country toddy.
Post lunch, the journey continued to the narrow inlets and the sights were captivating.
There were paddy fields on both sides and all you could see was green, green and more green! With pristine blue and shades of green surrounding all around, I couldn’t help but fall in love with nature. One can’t miss the children on the banks who excitedly wave at you.
Before we realized, it was already dark and time for us to wind up the aquatic journey.
A trip to the backwaters is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy nature. It’s a rare combination of sea, sky and land coming together to pamper your senses.
