PATNA: A man suspected to have been in touch with a module of ISIS was arrested in Bihar’s West Champaran district in an anti-terror operation on Thursday.

Ehtesamul Haq, 27, was arrested from his home in Belwa village under Sathi police station in a joint operation conducted by a team of anti-terrorist squad (ATS) from Uttar Pradesh, the Special Cell of Delhi Police and the West Champaran police.

“Haq, the son of Madrasa teacher named Mohammad Alauddin, was interrogated by a team of the district police, UP ATS and Special Cell of Delhi at Sathi police station. A tablet and other electronic gadgets were recovered from his possession,” said West Champaran superintendent Vinay Kumar.

Sources said interrogation with Haq and an examination of the electronic communication he had in the recent past led police believe that he was in touch with an ISIS module.

Haq had returned from Oman a year back after working there for some time, said sources. Police suspect that he may have been radicalised while working in Oman and that he was working to recruit young men in north Bihar for the international terrorist organisation.

He was produced at the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Bettiah, the headquarters town of West Champaran district, and was then taken on remand by the ATS team to Lucknow, said police sources.

At least nine people suspected of working for an ISIS module were arrested in joint operations led by UP ATS in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra on Thursday.
