NOIDA: Four more workers, who were hospitalised after a service lift crashed at an under-construction society in Noida Extension, succumbed on Saturday, pushing the death toll in the incident to eight, officials said.

The general manager of the construction company has been arrested for negligence.

The four workers who died on Friday were Ishtaq Ali (23) from Bihar’s Balrampur, Arun Tanti Mandal (40) from Banka, Vipot Mandal (45) from Katihar and Aris Khan (22) from Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha.

On Saturday, four more workers — Arbaaz Ali, 19, Kuldeep Pal, 20, Maan Ali, 20, and Mohammad Ali Khan, 18, succumbed to their injuries, while Kaif, 21, remains on ventilator support.

The accident took place around 8.30 a.m. on Friday at the under-construction site of Amrapali Dream Valley Society located in Greater Noida West, also known as Noida Extension.

The project was being completed under the supervision of the state-run National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC).

The Noida police registered an FIR under various IPC sections of the IPC.

Devendra Singh, general manager of Girdhari Lal Construction, the company hired by NBCC, was responsible for the construction site, police said.

“The lift was not repaired by the construction company despite workers and contractor informing about its malfunction,” a senior Noida police official said.

The official said that the GM allowed the lift to operate on a rainy day in violation of safety norms.
