A 41-year-old doctor was allegedly verbally abused and assaulted at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district following a dispute with a patient’s son, police said on Sunday.

The Kalyan police have registered a case against the accused, Vineet Jaywant Deshmukh (30), under sections 118(1) (voluntarily causing physical hurt) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the incident that occurred at a hospital in Kalyan East on Saturday night, an official said.

He said that the accused's father visited the outpatient department for a medical check-up.

After examining him, the victim, Dr Yogendra Jaiswal, prescribed medications and provided clear instructions on dosage and daily dietary restrictions.

Even as the doctor addressed the patient's queries, the accused began using disrespectful and aggressive language, demanding further clarification on dietary rules, dressing schedules, and medication usage.

Maharashtra: Mother of doctor assaulted by Shiv Sena corporator demands protection for medical professionals

He allegedly hurled abuses and attacked the doctor inside the OPD chamber, grabbing him by the neck.

Other patients and relatives present at the clinic intervened to rescue the physician, the official said.

This is the second reported attack on a doctor in Maharashtra in recent weeks, following the alleged assault of two doctors at a hospital by a Shiv Sena corporator.

In early July, a ruling Shiv Sena corporator and his associates allegedly assaulted two doctors and other staff at a hospital in Maharashtra's Thane district after a family was advised to shift a newborn to another facility.

The incident that occurred at the civic-run hospital in Kalyan was captured on video, which later went viral on social media.

The video purportedly showed the Sena corporator, Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, hitting the doctors.
