CHENNAI : AIADMK spokesperson C Ponnaiyan on Thursday clarified that the by-laws of the party would be relaxed for electing VK Sasikala as the next general secretary of the party.

“The general council and executive committee of the AIADMK have immeasurable powers to relax the by-laws of the party to make Sasikala the general secretary,” Ponnaiyan said while answering queries of media persons at the memorial of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa at Marina.

He said Sasikala had been living as the conscience of Jayalalithaa for a long time and she would be elected as general secretary of the party cadre unanimously. Opposition parties are trying to unleash canards against Sasikala with a view to destabilise the AIADMK and such rumours should not be given importance, he added.

He also said office bearers of the AIADMK at all level - from headquarters to village level had appealed to Sasikala to take up the mantle.  “We await the nod from her,”, Ponnaiyan added.

Responding to a question, he said Sasikala was behind all efforts taken by Jayalalithaa for the growth of the AIADMK. She worked with Jayalalithaa shoulder to shoulder for increasing the number of cadre from just 30 lakh to 1.5 crore. “So she is the lynchpin of the party and she will become the general secretary without any doubt,” he added.
