According to the protesters, the mass conducted in the archdiocese ignoring the Cardinal’s direction was invalid, which cannot be allowed in the church.
On Palm Sunday, Cardinal Mar George Alencherry conducted the Holy Mass in the unified format at St Mary’s Cathedral Basilica here.
The Church issued a statement saying that the act was deplorable and an open challenge to the Church’s system.

Demanding the formalisation of Holy Mass in the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, members of the laity took out a march to Ernakulam Bishop’s house on Feb 27.
The parishioners held a small procession to the Bishop’s House from the cathedral holding posters hailing the leadership of Mar Kariyil.
In the circular, the Synod of bishops has urged the clergy, priests, and laity to abandon their compulsive intellects and practise the prescribed unified system.
The priest said in the memorandum that they will not compromise with the cardinal and the synod on the mode of celebrating the holy mass.

Except for theparishes under Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese and Irinjalakuda diocese, churches in most of the other dioceses conducted the Mass in the new format as per the synod's decision.

A section of priests and laity activists of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese have decided to strengthen their protest against the Synod’s decision to implement standardised format of the mass.
Hundreds of laity from Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese held a protest march to Mount St Thomas, headquarters of Syro-Malabar Church on Sunday against the unification of the Holy Mass.
He reportedly assured them that necessary steps will be taken after discussions with bishops.
As per the newly approved format, the celebrant of the Mass would face the faithful during the introductory part, during the Liturgy of the Word and during the concluding part.
