Rain fury: 4,681 people shifted to 41 relief camps

Revenue Department authorities have estimated a loss of `46.9 lakh in damage to houses, and `12.9 lakh in agricultural loss.

KOCHI: With little respite from the fury of the rain in the district for the second consecutive day, the district administration has opened more relief camps and rehabilitated 1,489 families, comprising 4,681 persons, in 54 camps.

Revenue Department authorities have estimated a loss of `46.9 lakh in damage to houses, and `12.9 lakh in agricultural loss. A plantain farm in 1.5 acres in Chendamangalam grama panchayat in North Paravur was fully devastated.

District Collector Mohammed Y Safirulla on Tuesday held a review meeting to take stock of the flood situation. The Collector directed the Health Department to conduct medical camps at all the 54 relief camps and ensure precautionary measures to prevent an epidemic outbreak.

He also ordered sanitation works to be conducted, and to clear drains and canals to ensure the free flow of water. “The service of medical teams have been ensured in all the camps,” he said.  

In Kochi taluk, 1,088 persons from 421 families have rehabilitated in six camps. There are 336 persons from 150 families in Leo English Medium School, Chellanam, following the sea erosion. There are 500 persons from 190 families in St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, also in the region. While in Kanayannur taluk, 444 persons from 115 families are staying in 10 camps.

According to officers, five more camps were set up in Muvattupuzha on Tuesday. With this, 12 relief camps have been opened in 12 villages in Muvattupuzha taluk and 1,211 persons from 342 families were shifted to these camps. A majority of the camps are in Velloorkunnam village, which has now five.

Five relief camps were opened in Aluva taluk and one in Kunnathunadu taluk on Tuesday. Two camps were opened in Nedumbassery grama panchayat and one camp each in Kanjoor, Chemanganad and Choornikkara grama panchayats, and 422 persons from 115 families were shifted to these camps. The first camp was opened on Monday.

Holiday declared

The District Collector has declared a holiday on Wednesday for schools in Chellanam, Kunnukara and Puthenvelikka grama panchayats, and the schools where relief camps have been opened in the district. Holiday has also been declared in the schools in Muvattupuzha taluk, and Nedumbassery and Parakkadavu grama panchayat.
