CHANDIGARH: Papalpreet Singh, a close aide and mentor of radical preacher Amritpal Singh, was arrested by the Punjab Police on Monday. Sources said he was arrested in a Punjab Police operation that also involved its counter-intelligence wing.

Inspector General of Police (Headquarter) Sukhchain Singh Gill said Papalpreet Singh was arrested from the Kathunangal area in Amritsar and he has been booked under National Security Act (NSA) besides six other cases.

Gill said that police teams were working on some vital clues amidst the ongoing special operation. He said that Papalpreet Singh was wanted by the Punjab Police in six criminal cases. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the law, he said.

Gill appealed to the people of the state to continue maintaining peace and harmony in the state and not to pay any heed to fake news and rumours. He asserted that the law and order situation is completely under control and stable.

Both Amritpal and Papalpreet had been on the run from the law since March 18 when the Punjab Police launched a crackdown against the radical Sikh leader and his close aides. They were together after their dramatic escape from a police chase near Jalandhar. Both of them had escaped from Punjab to Haryana and then from Haryana to Uttrakhand and probably to Delhi as captured in CCTV footage, before they entered Punjab again.

They had reportedly taken different routes to escape after reaching Hoshiarpur. They had been taking refuge in different deras in the districts of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Amritsar. Papalpreet is a journalist based out of Amritsar who runs the website ‘Punjab Shield’, which is essentially a Khalistani propaganda site.
