India's COVID-19 tally has crossed the 61-lakh mark with a spike of 70,589 new cases and 776 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Case tally stands at 61,45,292 including 9,47,576 active cases, 51,01,398 cured/discharged/migrated & 96,318 deaths, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest update read.

Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that the duration of several schemes has been extended till December 31 due to COVID-19.

"The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has extended the duration of several schemes till 31.12.2020 in view of the continued disruption caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic in certain parts of the country and to provide greater Ease of Doing Business," a tweet from the Office of Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Maximum impact of COVID-19 faced by women, children and adolescents

Participating in a programme on maternal, newborn and child health via a video link, Vardhan said his ministry issued guidance to states to ensure that women, children and adolescents continue to get all the healthcare services, according to an official statement.

90 more test COVID positive in Muzaffarnagar

Ninety fresh COVID-19 cases took the total number of active cases here to 947 on Tuesday, while one more coronavirus fatality pushed the district's death toll to 69, officials said. The new cases reported in the district include 18 jail inmates, five bank employees and two policemen, they said. According to Muzaffarnagar DM Selvakumari J, 1,916 samples results were received by the authorities, of which 90 were positive.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Pune district increased by 2,453 to reach 2,80,723 on Tuesday, while the death toll rose by 87 to touch 6,446, an official said. Pune city led with 1,040 of the new cases, followed by Pimpri Chinchwad with 684, he said.

Himachal Pradesh reports 290 fresh COVID-19 cases

As many as 290 more people, including Rajya Sabha member Indu Goswami, tested positive for COVID-19 in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, taking the infection tally in the state to 14,748, while three fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 179. Goswami said in a Facebook post that she had met Sandeepni Bharadwaj in Delhi six days ago.

Assam tests record 1.34 lakh samples for COVID-19 on a day

Assam on Tuesday tested record 1.34 lakh samples for COVID-19, detecting 3,592 new cases, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The state's death toll reached 680 with 13 more fatalities, while the total number of cases rose to 1,77,221, he said.

Tamil Nadu extends lockdown till October 31 with more relaxations

Rajasthan to launch mass awareness campaign against COVID-19

A mass awareness movement will be launched in Rajasthan on October 2 to encourage people to adopt practices like wearing masks and maintaining social distance to combat COVID-19, officials said on Tuesday. The campaign will be run in 11 district headquarters, including Jaipur and Jodhpur, where the caseload is high. Section 144 of CrPC is already imposed in these districts.

Eleven fatalities were reported from Jammu and seven from the Valley, they added. "The UT recorded 1,081 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours -- 640 in Jammu and 441 in the Kashmir Valley," the officials said.

    COVID-19: Expert group recommends free vaccine shot only for high-risk populations, frontline workers
