India's COVID-19 case crossed the 55-lakh mark with a spike of 75,083 new cases and 1,053 deaths in last 24 hours, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.
The total case tally now stands at 55, 62,664 including 9,75,861 active cases, 44,97,868 cured/discharged/migrated and 88,935 deaths, Health Ministry's latest update informed.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan earlier assured the Lok Sabha that the Central government is not waiting for an "act of God" in fight against the virus but instead working round-the-clock to ensure that a vaccine is made available by the beginning of 2021.
The Minister's assurance came on Monday when he was speaking in the Lok Sabha in a late night discussion of the passage of the Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which promises protection to frontline workers, including healthcare professionals.
Assam on Tuesday reported 2,073 new cases of COVID-19 and eight more deaths, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Among the latest deaths, two happened in Kamrup Metropolitan and one each in Dibrugarh, Darrang, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Jorhat and Cachar, he said.
People from other states including migrant workers who are coming to the national capital after relaxation of the lockdown have shown a lower COVID-19 positivity rate in comparison to the city's population, officials said. As per the Delhi government's health bulletin issued on Tuesday, a total of 3,816 people were found to be COVID-19 positive among the 59,013 tested for the virus in the past 24 hours.
Odisha on Tuesday issued an advisory asking all COVID-19 treatment facilities to set up help desks and provide necessary information to family members of patients, after several people complained that their requests for details were being snubbed by the centres.
Pune district reported 3,291 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking its COVID-19 count to 2,57,797, while the death toll reached 5,870 after 96 people succumbed to the infection, an official said on Tuesday. A total of 1,614 people were discharged during the day.

With 2,736 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Chhattisgarh's caseload rose to 90,917, while 28 deaths over the past few days took the toll to 718, a health official said. The day also saw the discharge of 1,313 people from various hospitals post recovery while another 1,124 completed their home isolation, taking the tally of recoveries to 52,001, he said.
A COVID-19 vaccine candidate should show at least 50 per cent efficacy during phase III of clinical trials for it to be widely deployed, according to a draft guidance document for vaccine developers issued by the central drug authority.

Seven volunteers selected for phase III human clinical trial of the Oxford vaccine for COVID-19 at Pune's Sassoon General Hospital were declared "ineligible" to proceed further for various reasons, including testing positive for antibodies, an official said on Tuesday.

The Karnataka assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to reduce salaries and allowances of members of the state legislature by 30 per cent for a year to augment financial resources required to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 death toll in Uttar Pradesh reached 5,212 after 77 more people succumbed to the disease, while 5,722 fresh cases pushed the tally to 3,64,543, an official said on Tuesday. There are 63,148 active cases in the state, while 2,96,183 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the infection so far, Additional Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad said.
Three more people died due to COVID-19 in Bihar on Tuesday, raising the death toll in the state to 873, while 1,609 fresh cases pushed the tally to 1.71 lakh, a health department official said. The state conducted record 1.94 lakh sample tests on Monday, which took the total number of such examinations carried out so far to 60,63,568 lakh, he said.
Mumbai's COVID-19 tally reached 1,87,778 on Tuesday with the addition of 1,628 fresh cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The cumulative fatality count rose to 8,549 with 47 more people succumbing to the infection, it said.
Karnataka on Tuesday reported 6,974 new COVID-19 cases and 83 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 5,33,850 and death toll to 8,228, the Health department said. The day also saw the number of recoveries outnumbering new infections, with 9,073 patients getting discharged after recovery.
Punjab's COVID-19 tally crossed the one lakh-mark on Tuesday with 1,498 new cases, while 66 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 2,926, according to a medical bulletin. Eleven deaths were reported from Jalandhar, nine each from Ludhiana, Amritsar and Patiala, six from Gurdaspur and three each from Bathinda, Ferozepur and Rupnagar.
As many as 590 persons tested positive for coronavirus, while eight persons died of the infection in Goa on Tuesday, an official from the health department said. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the tally of the coastal state to 29,343, the official said.

Five prison inmates who battled COVID-19 donated their plasma in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Tuesday to help patients suffering from the disease, officials said. These inmates had earlier tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Having fully recovered, they were eligible for the donation, an official of the Luksar jail said.
At least 58 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Tuesday, pushing the tally to 4,791, a health department official said. Haryana reported 29 more fatalities due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 1,206, while 1,795 fresh cases pushed the state's infection tally to 1,14,870.
The COVID-19 tally in Mumbai's slum colony Dharavi rose to 3,065 on Tuesday with the addition of 15 new cases, a senior BMC official said. The official said 2,606 COVID-19 patients in the slum dominated area have already recovered from the infection and discharged from hospitals.
Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday recorded 1,235 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising its tally to 66,261, while 18 more fatalities pushed its death count to 1,042, officials said. It was for the 20th consecutive day that the number of fresh cases crossed 1,000 in a 24-hour period.
The COVID-19 caseload in Nagpur increased by 1,273 on Tuesday to reach 66,380, while 54 deaths took the toll to 2,150, an official said. He said 1,662 people were discharged during the day, taking the count of such cases to 55,212, leaving the district with 9,018 active cases.
The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Amravati rose by 393 to reach 11,578 on Tuesday, while eight deaths took the toll to 247, an official said. The number of people who have recovered from the infection here reached 8,689 after 179 people were discharged from hospitals during the day, he added.
