COVID-19 HIGHLIGHTS | Gujarat records 992 fresh cases of virus infection, 5 deaths

Health Ministry said that 78 per cent of active cases in the country are present in 10 states and UTs. 58% of new deaths reported in five States & Union Territories.

With 36,469 new COVID-19 infections, India's total cases surge to 79,46,429. 488 more patients succumbed to the virus, taking the toll to 1,19,502. The total number of active cases now stands at 6,25,857 after a decrease of 27,860 in the last 24 hours. The number of cured cases now stands at 72,01,070 with 63,842 new discharges.

Telangana recorded 837 new COVID-19 cases, 1,554 recoveries and 4 deaths, taking the total cases to 2,32,671. The number of recoveries now stands at 2,13,466 while the death toll rose to 1,315, the State Health Department said. There are 17,890 active cases in the state, the bulletin added.

UP govt allows liquor shops to remain open from 10 am to 10 pm

Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday issued an order saying that liquor shops in the state will be allowed to remain open till the pre-COVID timing from 10 am to 10 pm.

How Bihar is ensuring a 'safe and secure' polls amid pandemic

Some of the new rules for campaigning included:

1. A group of five people, including candidates, but excluding security personnel, is allowed to campaign from door to door.
2. For roadshows, the convoy of vehicles should be broken after every five vehicles instead of 10.
3. The interval between two sets of convoys should be half an hour instead of a gap of 100 metres.

Actor-turned-politician Payal Ghosh on Tuesday said that she will be taking a COVID-19 test after union minister Ramdas Athawale contracted the virus.

Ghosh, who has accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of rape, on Monday joined the Republican Party of India (RPI) in the presence of Athawale.

    The Centre on Tuesday said the current guidelines allowing various activities like opening of cinemas, theatres and multiplexes with up to 50 percent of their seating capacity will continue to be applicable till November 30 in areas outside the containment zones.

    Earlier, the guidelines for reopening activities issued on September 30 were to be in force till October 31.

    "As the COVID-19 negative test report has become mandatory for passengers, especially for international travel, there are rising apprehensions among travellers regarding the entire process of complying with various pre-travel requirements," it said.

    Passengers can submit their samples at a "location of choice", including at home, using the "At your Doorstep" service, the airline said, adding that the appointment booking service for testing is being offered by VFS Global.

    Asymptomatic COVID-19 sufferers lose antibodies sooner, shows study

    Asymptomatic coronavirus sufferers appear to lose detectable antibodies sooner than people who have exhibited Covid-19 symptoms, according to one of the biggest studies of its kind in Britain published on Tuesday.

    The number of coronavirus cases reported in India in a span of 24 hours dropped below 40,000 after over three months, while the new fatalities registered during the same period remained under 500, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

  • As per the figures accessed by this newspaper, the most populous state Uttar Pradesh, which has the fifth highest number of cases in the country, has a 33% shortage of doctors while 45% posts for nurses are lying unfilled.
