A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and AG Masih gave two weeks time to the speaker to file a status report indicating the steps taken for the adjudication of the disqualification pleas
The Supreme Court had earlier issued a contempt notice to the Telangana Speaker for not complying with its directive to decide on disqualification pleas of the MLAs who deflected to Congress.
The CJI-led bench termed the non-compliance of its earlier directions as "gross contempt" while issuing notices to the speaker and others on the pleas filed by the BRS leaders.
Court orders the speaker not to allow MLAs to prolong disqualification proceedings. It asked the speaker to draw adverse inferences if the MLAs protracted proceedings.
The bench sought responses of the state government, speaker's officer, Telangana legislative assembly secretary, ECI and the defected lawmakers before the next date of hearing.
As the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly was not acting on the disqualification petitions, the BRS knocked on the doors of the apex court, said a party leader.
