As per the proposal, a logistics and industrial hub will come up on 6.3 sq km of area at Vizhinjam, while a health tourism hub will be built on 4.01 sq km of area at Kovalam.

The biggest advantage of Vizhinjam is its strategic location. It is barely 10 nautical miles from the international shipping route that accounts for 30 percent of global cargo traffic.
As per reports, the company would invest Rs 5,000-Rs 6,000 crore each year in expanding its capacity with internal cash flow of about Rs 8,000 crore.

Emphasising the significance of the project, the chief minister said it is one of the state’s greatest contributions to the country.
He also termed Pinarayi a hapless CM, who had to be content with inaugurating development projects launched in Chandy’s tenure.
While the UDF has strengthened its demand to name the port after former chief minister Oommen Chandy, the LDF shot back saying it was a project initiated during the time of EK Nayanar.
Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan in a Facebook post emphasised the role played by Oommen Chandy and his government in making Vizhinjam port a reality.
The first ship comes to Vizhinjam at a time when the government is facing severe flak from the Opposition on the political front.
The port is positioned to become a key development initiative on the lines of the NH expansion, GAIL pipeline, Kochi Metro, and Edamon-Kochi power highway.
