Internet Domain Names in 7 Indian Languages Soon

HYDERABAD: From Wednesday, you can type web addresses in the Devnagari script with .bharat instead of the current .in domain. And soon, one can get to type web addresses in local languages like Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu and Tamil, thanks to the initiative undertaken by National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).

“We are committed to a multi-lingual internet to connect people in every corner in India. From August, 27, domain names are going to be in Indian Languages. Domain names .Bharat in Devanagri script covers Indian languages like Boro, Hindi, Dogri, Konkani, Maithalai, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi,” said Govind, CEO, NIXI and chairman .IN Registry. Currently, ICANN had approved seven languages such as Bengali, Gujarati and Tamil and seven to eight  more languages are likely to be added.
