BANGALORE: Christ University, wellknown for its excellence in education, is also famous for the exquisite campus. The lush green is one of the most notable things about the college. Right from the Auditorium Block to the III Block (BBA and Law), the buildings are shaded with a canopy of trees and heightening the beauty are a number of tiny gardens, with colourful flowers all around. “Even after college hours, we love to hang around in the campus — in the open spaces below the trees,” says Rishab, a second year student.

Then, there’s the picturesque Birds’ Park which provides shelter to a flock of pigeons, turkeys and various other birds. This bird’s trove often transforms into a platform for outdoor activities and celebrations by the students.

Besides being scenic and refreshing, the greens are also educative. The various species of trees have their botanical names displayed on them.

According to Sujjan, a third year student, “The trees serve a lot of purposes.

The shade provides us a perfect place to chill out, a cool place to discuss assignments, and the namecards educate us and sometimes even act as landmark.” ‘The under the tree shade’ area wins the maximum votes from the Christites in the list of the favoured hangout spots inside the college.

Next on the list is the canteen, coming second only with a marginal difference.

They have four eateries.

While the Cafeteria lures vegetarian Christies, the Ivy Hall pulls its own share of fans for the non-vegetarian fare. By offering chips, samosas, rolls, sandwiches and more, the Food Court appeals to the taste buds of the young fast-food-loving crowd. Students find relief against the blazing sun at the soda counter, also present there. The Kiosk, also a snack joint, finds customers in the BCom and BBA students as it is closest to their blocks.

If you are at Christ University, you cannot miss the sprawling ground that finds sports enthusiats enjoying football, cricket, volleyball and more.

The college is known for it’s strict discipline. Yet they have always promoted holistic development of the students. The college has a large share of students with the creative spark. There are theatre groups and musical bands, not just one or two but quite a few.

According to Prasarng S, guitarist of the rock band Lost Creations, “Our college has been very supportive.

They have always encouraged us to take part in fests, within the city and even in other cities.” But for a college that has so many bands (Catalyst, All the Fat Children, to name a few) they have to struggle to get the jamming room.

Lost Creations, who made their way into the finals of the national level Campus Rock Idols, says that it’s a tough deal and that one needs to be the best.

The university was selected for the Best Campus Award by the Bangalore Urban Art Commission for four consecutive years, 1996 through 2000.

“Each sapling planted here is chosen, not at random, but with careful planning and consideration. The green spread is even protected to the extent that not a single tree is chopped after it is planted,” says Mr Padmakumar, a lecturer in Christ University.
