BANGALORE: There once lived a man who made enough money that he bought himself enough land in the Cantonment area to have a whole road (Lavelle Road) named after him. All thanks to his golden (read mining) expedition.
Michael F Lavelle, a resident of Bangalore, who retired from the army, applied to the Mysore Government for mining rights in Kolar district. It was 1873.
Within two years, operations started. Soon he realised that more money had to be put into the venture. So he approached Major General Beresford and transferred all the mining rights to him. Beresford gradually acquired the entire area of Kolar Gold Fields. After making a fortune from the venture, Michael Lavelle bought land in the city.
The road that now stretches from Richmond Circle, all the way to MG Road is named after him.
