What are the current challenges in the power sector today?
The country is facing immense power shortage and there is excess dependence on monsoon for power generation. The high cost of power purchase, transmission losses, economic and environmental constraints in new installation, high gestation period for new projects and reluctance from investors in setting up industries due to power shortage are some of the main challenges in the power sector today. Also, for example, to generate 500MW of power from a coal plant, it takes 15 lakh tons of coal, 1.5 lakh tons of limestone and about 2200 crore gallons of water. The negative impacts of this power plant are 35 lakh tons of carbon dioxide, 720 tons of carbon monoxide and 125,000 tons of ash among others.
How can REI contribute in overcoming these challenges?
Thrust should be given for conserving energy and then viability of renewable energy should be considered before suggesting alternate methods. For example, Solar streetlights would be a wonderful alternate to places where there is no grid connection, but would become a costly proposition if there is grid connection. Here conserving energy would be a cheaper alternate.
According to the Clinton Climate Initiative Release, for every 100,000 Street lights replaced with LED Street lights the reduction in Carbon emission is approximately 40,000 tons a year which is equivalent of 6,700 cars off the road every year.
Another example of conservation is through solar street lights. With solar Street lights you can illuminate an outdoor space using only the sun as the energy supplier. After the initial purchase of the lights they are cost free, making them the green choice for Street lighting. There is no electricity required to power them, nor do they require a natural gas connection. With direct sunlight, they provide an entirely sustainable means of illumination that, with a little maintenance, will last you years.
At REI, our main goal is energy conservation. We want to help manage power, reduce power cost and maintenance cost, reduce carbon footprint and contribute towards a greener planet.
