Iruppu Falls, a perfect getaway

From our online archive

Madikeri: Iruppu Falls, one of the most historic places in Kodagu, dates back to the times of Ramayana. According to a legend, the Falls was created by Rama and his brother Lakshmana when they visited the site in search of Sita.

During the search, Rama asked his brother for some drinking water. Lakshmana immediately shot an arrow which hit Brahmagiri forest range, the source of the Falls. Because of this, the Falls is also known as Lakhmana Theertha. However, since the Falls is found at Iruppu, it is commonly known as Iruppu Falls.

The Iruppu Sree Rameshwara Temple, where Rama supposedly made a Shivalinga in honour of Shiva, is as famous as the Falls.

People from across the district throng the Temple during the Shivarathri festival.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the Falls has become a spot for anti-social elements. The Forest Department, police and locals have taken stern steps to control this.

Nagarahole National Park, Sree Mruthyunjaya  Temple at Badagarakeri, Sree Mahavishnu Temple also known as Tiru Nelli (on the Kodagu-Kerala border) are the other places to visit.
