Hoping for greener times

Akshatha Shetty

Amidst all the chaos and traffic congestion on the roads, a 27-year-old cyclist whizzes past furious motorists and frustrated bikers with a smile on his face. Battling harsh weather conditions, Thiyagarajan has always been determined to bike-commute to work every day. Today, three years later, he has managed to cover 16,590 km and has undertaken several green initiatives to spread awareness on the importance of biking and perils of cutting down trees.

“I started biking in 2009 primarily to improve my fitness levels. What started out as a complete stress buster has now led to a full-fledged initiative. I would like more and more people to start biking and avoid using motor vehicles for commuting purposes. Of course, this cannot be done overnight but we really have to try,” said the Bangalorean who has been cycling 46 km to work almost every day.

According to Thiyagarajan, it is necessary for all to maintain eco-balance and adopt a healthier lifestyle. He believes that if each and every person takes active interest in doing their bit for the environment, the world will be a better place for all to live in.

“It is difficult to commit to such a cause. Cycling all round the year irrespective of various issues you face is no easy task. The longest I have gone on a trip with my bike is Nandi Hills. I am proud to say that a lot of my friends commute by bicycles today,” said the cyclist who has also successfully initiated the use of carbon-capturing technology in his organisation.

Here, the core idea lies in absorbing pollutants from the atmosphere and using them to manufacture propellants. Accentuating on the importance of green energy, he also suggests that the government should implement laws that will make power generation from renewable sources of energy like wind and solar mandatory in certain areas.

With the hope that someday, we all will move towards a greener and brighter future, the cyclist continues to do his bit to protect nature’s most cherished gifts — trees.

Aside from bringing to light the problems associated with chopping down trees, the cyclist has also expressed his concern over the growing trend of destroying nature.
