BENGALURU: A 40-year old lecturer from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) attempted suicide by hanging herself, after being allegedly abused in front of students and lecturers by a senior professor.
According to police, Dr. Mamatha, a lecturer at the institute, attempted suicide on November 17 but was rescued by students. She was promptly shifted to the hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. However, the incident came to light only on Saturday.
In her suicide note addressed to the director of BMRCI Dr. P K Devdas, she alleged that Dr. Hemavathi, another senior professor in the institute had abused her. Despite repeated complaints, no actions were taken against the professor, she said in the letter.
Dr. PK Devadas told Express, "Both Mamatha and Hemavathi are lecturers in the nursing college at BMCRI. They had been fighting for a long time over personal issues. Mamatha took the drastic step of attempting suicide. We have counselled both of them. Mamatha was here on deputation."
Mamatha had taken leave for Ganesha festival but did not inform Hemavathi about it. Since then, even trivial issues would trigger fights between them, sources said.
