BENGALURU: At least 9,000 untrained teachers working in schools across the state could lose their jobs if they fail to get Diploma in Elementary Education degrees by April 2019. All teachers are required to have this degree as a minimum qualification.
This number includes teachers from both private and government schools. The data was revealed during a video conference conducted by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry with the primary and secondary education ministers from all the states on Wednesday.
State Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait provided this information to HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar during the conference. After the video conference, Sait said, “We collected details of untrained teachers after a final notification issued by the Union HRD ministry recently. As per the data at least 9,000 teachers are untrained.
They now have a one-time opportunity to get qualified by April 2019.”Of the 9,278 untrained teachers, 8,519 are from private schools and 759 from government schools. “These 759 government school teachers include those we hired as guest teachers at the district levels. We have asked all these teachers to pursue D.Ed course in National Institute for Open Schooling,” Sait said.
However, during the video conference some ministers including Sait mentioned a Supreme Court judgment which had banned distance education degrees for B.Ed and D.Ed courses. To this, Javadekar said that it applies only to freshers and not to teachers who are already in service.
