Now, varsities to be ranked for campus hygiene

Educational institutions to be awarded Swachhta Ranking; B’lore varsity to apply

BENGALURU: Higher education institutions and universities which maintain cleanliness in the campus will be rewarded with ‘Swachhta Ranking’. The University Grants Commission has issued a communication in this regard to all universities across the nation. The institutions which will be selected for the award will be invited to the National Swachhta Conference, which will be held in New Delhi on September 8. The Ministry of Human Resource Development will announce the rankings.

The interested institutions can submit their applications by July 31 by logging into www.mhrd.gov.in
Prof Muniraju, in-charge vice-chancellor, Bangalore University said, “We will definitely apply for Swachhta ranking. We fulfill a majority of the criteria given by them. All these days, the award was given for academic excellence, but now it’s a good initiative that institutitons are being awarded for keeping their campus clean.”

Fill up web based application before July 31, 2017
Teams will inspect institutions in August
Ranks will be finalised in the first week of September
Awards will be given at a conference in New Delhi on September 8

Criteria to judge  cleanliness on campuses
(85pc weightage)

Availability of toilets in hostels, toilet condition, maintenance, running water facility, academic buildings
Garbage clearance in campus and frequency
Garbage disposal system
Any innovative technology being used for solid and Liquid waste management
Hostel kitchen hygiene, apparel of staff, extent of mechanisation of food preparation
Water storage, pipeline systems and quality of drinking water
Green coverage of campus
Activities outside campus (15 per cent weightage)
Whether any village or neighbourhood adopted
Outcomes achieved in spreading awarness about hygiene
