BENGALURU: The Bengaluru municipal corporation, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is evacuating people residing in low lying areas to nearby school and community halls after heavy showers that lashed the city resulted in deaths of five people. Three of the deceased were found to be residents of Kurubarahalli, low lying area, in North Bengaluru.
The state government Saturday also announced to provide food, bed sheets along with medicines for next three to four days till the quantum of rainfall gets reduced.
Residents of low-lying areas, including Kurubarahalli and Nayandahalli have been asked to shift to other places.
Mayor Sampath Raj who’s been visiting Kurubarahalli and other places since Friday night said that the Met department has predicted heavy rains for the next three to four days.
“This really puts the people in low lying areas at risk. We are evacuating people from these places and sending them to nearby BBMP and government schools and colleges. Also, we have our own BBMP Community halls,” he said.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah along with senior ministers in his cabinet D K Shivakumar, Ramalinga Reddy and K J George visited Kurubarahalli where three deaths occurred and two more were feared to have been washed away in a drain on Friday evening.
H D Deve Gowda, B S Yeddyurappa, D V Sadananda Gowda and others BJP leaders were also among other ministers who visited the site.
