BENGALURU: Over 600 passengers travelling in the Karnataka Express suffered a major scare when the engine of their train derailed near the Channasandra railway station on Friday evening.

The train stopped immediately and another engine was brought to the spot and the train resumed journey later.

Public Relations Officer N R Sridharamurthy said, “The derailment of the engine occurred at 5.20 pm near the Channasandra yard. None of the passengers were affected in any way. Nor was there any damage to the coaches.”

The frontal wheels of the engine coach had shot out of the tracks, said a railway official.

Following the scare, most of the passengers who generally alight at the KSR railway station, opted to deboard at the spot and depart to different parts of the City.

“An engine was brought to the spot and it took the train to Yelahanka railway station. However, many opted to alight here,” the PRO said.  As a cascading effect, all trains on the Bengaluru-Channasandra and Bengaluru-K R Puram route were delayed for over two hours.

A few passengers took to social media to convey their anger over the delay in the departure of their trains.

Ironically, the Karnataka Express shot into limelight just a couple of days ago when Bengaluru Railway Divisions’s first official `Train Captain’ was installed on the train.

Asked about the reasons for the derailment, Sridharmurthy said, “We are still trying to find out the cause for it.”
