Income Tax dept seizes Rs 9 crore from TN jeweller's SUV on Hosur Road

The vehicle, which was travelling from Bengaluru towards Hosur, was taken to the Electronic City police station along with its two occupants.

BENGALURU: The Income Tax Department seized Rs 9 crore in unaccounted cash from a Tamil Nadu-based jeweller after intercepting his SUV on Hosur Road on Tuesday night. According to officials, following a tip-off about illegal transportation of cash towards Tamil Nadu, Jagadish, Deputy Director of Income Tax, Unit-22, Bengaluru, sought the assistance of the Electronic City police night-beat staff.

The police intercepted the car, bearing registration number KL 20 T 8629, at a signal on Hosur Road, shortly after the BETL Toll, around 10.30 pm. The vehicle, which was travelling from Bengaluru towards Hosur, was taken to the Electronic City police station along with its two occupants.

They were later handed over to Income Tax officials. During a search of the vehicle, the officials found Rs 9 crore in cash. One of the occupants was identified as Sachin (42) of Sindhu Jewellers in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

He was taken into custody by the Income Tax officials for further questioning. Meanwhile, Income Tax officials conducted searches at Sachin’s residence in Tamil Nadu and recovered an additional Rs 1.3 crore in cash.
