BENGALURU: Drug Action Forum-Karnataka (DAF-K) has urged the Karnataka health department to direct Iskcon to stop supplying food to patients at Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. DAF-K said the hospital had earlier been providing eggs and fish to around 700 patients daily, before shifting to vegetarianism in 2020.
The forum said it was concerned that Iskcon’s vegetarian and sattvik food may not provide adequate protein and nutrition to patients.
The organisation said nutritious food with adequate protein is an important component of treatment and recovery. While stating that it respected Iskcon’s religious sentiments and practices, DAF-K said providing purely vegetarian food to patients requiring nutritious and balanced meals was “unscientific and unwarranted”.
