BHUBANESWAR: KIMS doctors have successfully removed a pointed metallic pin from the food pipe of a 10-month-old baby using advanced endoscopic procedure. The child had accidentally swallowed the pin which got stuck in the food pipe.
The infant from Rourkela was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after several bouts of vomiting. Doctors said examination and imaging revealed that the pin was stuck in the upper part of his food pipe, close to the throat.
“If the object had pierced the wall of the food pipe, it could have caused serious internal injury and turned life-threatening too. Therefore, our medical team had to carefully plan the procedure to remove it without causing further damage,” they said.
A multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from the ENT, gastroenterology and anaesthesiology departments successfully removed the object from the infant’s food pipe after administering him general anaesthesia.
The endoscopic procedure was carried out by Dr Kabikanta Samantaray, Dr Manas Ranjan Rout, Dr T Rajmohan Rao, Dr Dibyalochan Praharaj and Dr Sneha along with the supporting medical and nursing teams.
Founder of KIIT and KISS Achyuta Samanta congratulated the doctors and wished the baby a healthy and happy life.
