Was there any hesitation initially to take up compereing
Initially, I did hesitate, especially after watching DD (Divya Dharshini) perform, but I was a chatter box during my MOP Vaishnav days and that did help me lose all my inhibition. Now I travel on the twin wheels of compereing and playback singing.
How did you hit the lime light
Born to an IT professional (her father Vijay Gopal), working in a multi-national company in Chennai, I studied at Church Park School where I participated in almost all the competitions. I never missed out on a prize in any of the competitions I participated in.
Your first public appearance on TV
In 2007-08 a music reality show in Kairali TV in Kerala.
Experience with Super Singer Junior?
Though I used to sing before turning an anchor, it is Super Singer Junior with which I am identified wherever I go, and that is nice. I do everything. I have participated in dance, particularly western styles, and various fashion shows too. I've never had stage fear.
Which was your first playback song
My first song was Om Namaste in a Telugu film in 2008. It was all because of Devi Sri Prasad who has been watching me from my childhood days. He is like a brother and was quick to spot my talent. Suddenly one day, he called me over the phone and took a voice test. And that's where it all began.
Have you learnt music
No. I haven't had any formal coaching previously. I know a little but for the past five years I have been learning music from Nandhini Shankar.
Why do you prefer singing item songs
MOST people say that my voice suits well for item numbers. This idea came soon after Dheemthanakka thillana from Villu. Of course there are several songs in the same style. But I'd like to perform melodious songs too.
Your voice suits best for..
Many say that my voice suits Nayanthara. I'm glad.
Why do you refuse acting offers
Yes. Many have approached me with acting offers. But honestly, I don’t like acting because I cannot portray different moods. I like being cheerful all the time. Even people from the industry have suggested that I accept offers from a few big companies. But how can I take up acting when it can never come to me naturally?
Singing or anchoring
Singing is my first love and I will go ahead with it.
Your favourite singer/musician..
A R Rahman for his fast, digital music, Ilayaraja sir for his excellent melodies and Chitra madam for her voice. It has been good to sing along with Shankar Mahadeven sir.
Your favourite hang-out place
Sathyam Theatre. I have spent most of my time along with my friends there, during my PG days. And now the new Express Avenue Mall where I go planning an evening of window shopping but end up returning home with a heavy purchase.
