CHENNAI: A labourer, who was working at the airport expansion site, was crushed to death on Thursday.

Police said that Seetharaman (19) from Kumbakonam was escorting a crane carrying iron pipes when he tripped over and was fatally crushed to death under its wheels.

Airport officials said that  they were awaiting an explanation from the construction company involved in the project, over the incident.

However, other labourers at the site alleged that the deceased would have not have worn his safety gear. Police said they were searching for the crane driver, who is absconding.
