One part of the city that stays completely away from the lifestyle column is north Chennai, of which Kasimedu is the most popular. Known for its rowdy elements and the fish market, Kasimedu has another interesting side to it — the scenic and peaceful beach.

The Kasimedu seashore, unlike the other beaches, is guarded by the tetrapods (rocks) that buffer the runway from the waves. Evenings are a delight especially if you can catch the sunset — the psychedelic sight of the sea when the sun goes down is glorious!

There are no food stalls or food courts on the shore to clutter the beach. There are, however, a couple of push-carts that sell ice creams and chips. The crowds that come to the beach are mostly families or couples — the latter take shelter behind the rocks for few moments of privacy. But due to lack of lighting, Kasimedu beach is slightly unsafe for women.

There is no long stretch of sand to walk but as you stroll alongside the coast, you’ll stumble upon graffiti, rude drawings and writing that covers the long runway. The unending sheet of water with deep, dirty blue waves swirling repetitively around, hits the moving water almost silently and comes right up onto the stones.

With strict security at the gate, the beach is closed to the public after 7pm. Though it’s hidden from the hustle-bustle of the city, the Kasimedu beach is slowly becoming a hotspot for many Chennaiites.
