CHENNAI: It's a problem that most men suffer from, but are either unaware of or too ashamed to come out with, according to noted sexologist Dr T Kamaraj.

"Erectile dysfunction is a problem that affects 50 percent of the men aged over 40," he says, "Considering the fact that there is a direct link between a man's health and his sex life, it is quite important to ensure ED is corrected fast." India being the impotence capital of the world, this issue is particularly well researched here in the Indian Institute of Sexual Medicine, he added. In a first in the country, Dr Kamaraj has imported a unique device that is said to quell ED without "any surgery nor additional drugs". The Medispec ED 1000 brought to India by Medix Medical Systems, works on the principle of Erectile Dysfunction Shockwave Therapy, explained S Ragothaman, MD-Medix Medical Systems.

"This is the same concept of shockwave therapy used to dissolve kidney stones and subsequently in sports medicine. The dosage is what differs," he adds. According to him, the apparatus will discharge 0.05 milliJoule of low-intensity extra corporeal shockwaves to the penis, to "stimulate blood flow as well as the growth of new blood vessels," he adds. The action of the endothelial growth factor will contribute to the formation of new blood vessels. The treatment course will run across 9 weeks, during which the machine will be applied twice a week, while weeks 4-6 will be a rest period, "This course will be supplemented by an intensive walking schedule where the patients are advised to walk at least 10,000 steps per day. Other than this certain exercises specific to stimulating penile blood flow will be given."

While this machine has been used in the USA for the past 3 years, it is now available in 21 countries, and is highly recommended, says Ragothaman. "Results in Asia have shown that this has a success rate of 92.5 percent, in taking your erection hardness score from 2 to 4," he added. The treatment will be available at Aakash Fertility Centre and Hospital.
