CHENNAI: Increased research and development in the application of nanotechnology in the textile sector is the need of the hour, said Dr V Subramaniam, Director - Department of Textile Technology at Jaya Engineering College. Formerly a professor at Anna University, he went on to say that permanent nanofinishes in fabric were the future, as they ensured variants such as wrinkle-resistant clothes, as well as protective variants. “The applications are infinite but they require lots of research. Flame and water resistant fibres are things that will find a market soon. There is a definite need to give increased attention to technical textiles,” he said. He spoke at a business interaction organised as part of Vastra - an international textile and apparel fair that is slated to be held in Jaipur between November 22 and 25. They have organised a road show, where the organisers are meeting business clients, dealers and wholesale buyers in various cities around the country - Chennai is the eighth city where the road show was held on Monday.
Vastra is jointly organised by RIICO, FICCI - Rajasthan State Council, Ministry of Textile, Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan. Gyan Prakash, Director, FICCI - Rajasthan State Council explained how this would be a B2B textile forum that offered everything from “fibre to fashion” and the focus was to be on projecting India as a textile hub and show investors the investment potential that the country’s large scale producers have to offer. The fair will be held at a spacious 12,500 sq m-venue and participants from all over the world will be present, assured the organisers.
