Honorary Doctorate for C S Seshadri

The University of Hyderabad conferred the degree on the founder-director of Chennai Mathematical Institute for academic contributions.

The Founder Director of Chennai Mathematical Institute, C S Seshadri, was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Science (Honoris Causa) by the University of Hyderabad at an event held at Loyola College in the city on Saturday. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad presented the degree to Seshadri.

A noted mathematician, Seshadri’s contributions have been central to the development of moduli problems and geometric invariant theory as well as representation theory of algebraic groups. In 2012, his Collected Papers was published in two volumes that runs to nearly 1700 pages.

Interestingly, Seshadri is an alumnus of Loyola College, where he graduated with BA (Hons) degree in Mathematics in 1953. In 1989, Seshadri took charge as the director of the Chennai Mathematical Institute, then known as the SPIC Mathematical Institute.
