Understanding neuro disability

TRIMED, billed as India’s first chain of integrated medical centres, in association with Neurokrish, held a discussion on neuro-developmental disability in children.

At the discussion, Chris French, from the University of Melbourne, delivered a lecture titled “How does the brain work?” The human brain is perhaps the most complex of organs, boasting between 50-100 billion nerve cells or neurons that constantly interact with each other. These neurons carry messages through electrochemical processes; meaning, chemicals in our body (charged sodium, potassium and chloride ions) move in and out of these cells and establish an electrical activity," said French.

Dr French talked about research carried out at cellular level ie patch clamping, real time optical imaging, genetic manipulation of animals and optogenetics. While highlighting the imaging research, he also showed a few examples from Functional MRI (FMRI) and MRI Tractography.

TRIMED also unveiled their new newly build centre in Velachery, which will help children with developmental disabilities by offering integrated treatment. E S Krishnamoorthy of TRIMED said that under the programme, a part of the cost of treatment of poor children would be borne by TRIMED.

“We hope to treat 500 children by the end of the year. We have already received funding for 300 children and hope that we will soon start with their treatments,” he added.
