Nine children who were lodged in a juvenile home near Chengalpet went missing on Saturday. Their absences came to light during an attendance check.
The boys, who stayed in a single room, reportedly escaped by breaking a window grill and jumping over the 20-feet-tall compound wall that had a barbed wire mesh on top.
Police said there were 21 children lodged in the home that housed juveniles in conflict with law for various offences for which they were being tried by the Juvenile Justice Board.
Based on home superintendent Dhanasekara Pandian’s complaint, Chengalpet Town police registered a case.
Scrap Stolen
Police on Saturday registered a case of burglary after `5 lakh worth of scrapped copper cables were stolen from a scrap shop in Chintadripet late on Thursday night.
Police said that the shop was run by Varadan, who also lived in the same area. He discovered the theft when he opened his shop on Friday morning and was shocked to find the premises emptied.
Based on his complaint that an estimated `5 lakh worth of cables were stolen, a case was registered by Chintadripet Police.
Gold smuggling
Customs officials at the Chennai Airport detained a 43-year-old man, who had arrived in Chennai from Bangkok, as he was found to be carrying two gold bars weighing 500 gram each and worth almost `25 lakh concealed in the soles of his shoes, early on Saturday. Customs officials are questioning Fakarday Hussain, who arrived by a Thai Airways flight at 1 am.
