The Nehru Stadium might have lost the opportunity to host the Asian Athletic Championship due to the Lankan Tamils’ issue, but it is getting a major facelift ahead of other national and international sports events.

Renovation work at an approximate cost of Rs 46 crore is underway at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the past few months.

Speaking to City Express, an official from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) said, “The stadium is getting ready to host upcoming State, national and international sports meets, which are scheduled for the coming months.”

Renovation works including the installation of an international size eight-lane synthetic athletic track are underway.

The stadium will have a sub-base for a warm up track on the rear side of the indoor stadium. Apart from the Nehru Stadium, SDAT has been renovating other sports centres in the city such as the Velachery Aquatic Complex, Nehru Park Sports Complex and Shenoy Nagar Swimming Pool Complex.

The works at these sports complexes are nearing completion.

SDAT has also undertaken renovation of sports complexes across the State and is constructing a Sports Hostel of Excellence in the city at a cost of `70 lakh.
