Adding beauty to furniture

Janani Sampath

Having been an interior designer for a range of constructions that include office spaces, residential complexes and commercial spaces, it was a moment of realisation that prompted Anushri Jain to look at furniture as more than just good looking pieces of fillers for the space .

“I realised that most of the furniture were specimens that people chose from other’s collection or from magazine spreads. They were too repetitive and lacked imagination and character,” she says.

After a summer course in furniture design from Florence Institute Of Design International, Italy in 2012, Jain ventured into furniture design and production that resulted in the furniture label ‘High On Design’.

The brand combines the exquisiteness of traditional designs and the temperament of contemporary look.

She says that as a designer she is very fond of teak wood for many reasons. “There is a lot of environmental consciousness that I work with as a designer. My affinity for Burma teak for furniture designs is precisely because of my determination to come up with designs that are in complete harmony with nature,” she says.

Talking about the USP of her work, she says it is one that couples the old world charm with a dash of modernity. She adds, “The beauty of incorporating nature within itself and the rarity and uncommonness of it being used with the raw boldness of the iron makes it all the more alluring to juxtapose it as a part of a contemporary surrounding giving it a charming rustic yet modern feel.”

But the most interesting aspect of her designs that she produces working together with a group of carpenters, is the crafting of arty pieces from a single log of wood.

“The raw element of nature, not only acts as continuation of the outside to the inside but also the eco-friendliness of the pieces acts as a relief to the contemporary homes/offices of today’s time. It brings out a character and speaks for itself by its smooth organic flow,” she adds.

Jain’s furniture design, an angled seater, won the prestigious ‘A’ Design Award’ in arts, crafts and ready-made design award category.

As part of her future plans, Jain hopes to have an exclusive furniture showroom for her designs that again strive to combine utility of a furniture piece coupled with an element of art.
