CHENNAI: Doyens of Madras Awards is back with its second edition on August 23. Organised as part of Madras Week by Ambassador Pallava, the event aims at recognising and honouring those people who have put the city on the world map. The list includes Padma Vibhushan Dr M S Swaminathan for Science, Padma Vibhushan Dr Prathap Reddy for Medicine, Padma Shri V Bhaskaran for Hockey, Padma Shri Vijay Amritraj for Tennis, A Vellayan and B A Kodandarama Setty for industry, Bhaskar Ramamurthy for Academics, and Priyadarsini Govind for Arts.
This time, it is being celebrated in a larger way, according to Kirthivasan, general manager, Ambassador Pallava. With two Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan awardees, the event comprises eight awardees as compared to seven last year, he said.
Kirthivasan revealed the names selected by a select committee of Ambassador Pallava, at the press meet that was organised on Monday.
The awards will be presented by Governor K Rosaiah, and Dr S S Badrinath, chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, (who was a recipient of the previous year’s Doyen Award) will be delivering the keynote address, at the event on Saturday.
“No other event in India would have witnessed the gathering of such great people on the same stage at the same time,” said professor V Chandrasekhar, a coordinator of the event.
