CHENNAI: The Surgical Gastroenterology Department at the Madras Medical College attended ‘14 World Congress of the International Society of Diseases of Esophagus,’ held in Canada recently. With a team of six PG students, this is the first institute to have participated in the conference.

Speaking to mediapersons, Dr Chandramohan, HOD, Surgical Gastroenterology Department, MMC, said, “This is the first institute to represent six postgraduate students from the same department in the prestigious conference, which was conducted from September 22 to 24.” Chandramohan had headed the team of six postgraduate students for the conference. The students later attended a 10-day training programme on Trans Thoracic and Trans Abdominal esophageal procedures at Virginia Mason Medical Center, USA.

“This was a rare opportunity that any student would get. The students also participated in the academic discussions, tumour board and medical audit meetings in the hospital,” Chandramohan said.

The department also presented papers on rare surgeries that the hospital performed so far, like removal of sharp foreign bodies in the esophagus and more. Poster presentations and video presentations were made at the conference which saw the participation of 50 countries.
