Cop to explain why he returned banned fish cart

Express News Service

CHENNAI: Madras High Court has directed a police officer attached to Esplanade station to explain in person on August 16 why he had returned a motorised fish cart, seized by activist ‘Traffic’ KR Ramaswamy, to the owner.

In his writ petition, Ramaswamy submitted that plying of motorised fish carts in the city had been banned by the High Court over a decade ago, on the basis of a PIL filed by him.

However, he noticed a person using the banned vehicle at the night of July 31 last. He seized the vehicle and handed over it to Esplanade police.

A crowd of members of the general public, hawkers and advocates gathered at the police station and the officer concerned released the fish cart to the owner. He sent a representation to various authorities in this connection the very next day. As there was no action, he is moving the High Court, he said in his petition.
