Government bus plunges into ten feet canal killing motorist in Chennai

CHENNAI: In a bizarre accident, one person was killed and four others were injured when a State transport bus jumped over a central median and plunged from a bridge and fell from about 10 feet height into canal near Vanaragaram on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said, the state run bus plying from Chennai to Kallakurchi had crossed Porur toll gate at around 4 pm carrying around thirty passengers. “Since it was raining heavily, the bus driver claimed to have lost balance of the vehicle, jumped the central median strip which was about one feet and collided head on with a motorbike, killing him motorist on the spot,” said a police source. 

The bus driver G Kannan (48), a native of Villupuram told the police that the roads were slippery due to the rains and he lost control of the vehicle while traveling on the bypass. The bus plunge into a ten feet rain water storm canal and came to a halt.  Passerby’s who witnessed the incident immediately alerted the police and informed the ambulance who rushed to the spot. The bus passengers were rescued and sent to hospital. 

The deceased motorist was identified as Balamurugan (36), a native of Kumbakonam who worked in Cholamandal arts village situated in injambakkam. He was on his way to Koyambedu, when he met with the ill fate. “He wore a helmet, but the injury was heavy, that killed him on the spot,” added the source. 

Meanwhile, the four others who were injured among which one person was discharged, two others were admitted to Chrompet Government Hospital and another person is undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital. 

A case has been registered with the Poonamallee traffic investigations, since the driver is under treatment. “He would be arrested as soon as he is discharged. Meanwhile, the bus will be sent for inspection to check whether there was any break-failure.”said the officer.  Tension prevailed in the area and traffic came to a halt for about two hours in the bypass due to the accident.
