A musical quest to curb suicide

An upcoming filmmaker, Vignesh Muthusamy, has released a song that addresses the four stages of depression, and addresses the lack of coordinated effort to prevent suicide

CHENNAI: Twenty seven-year-old Vignesh Muthusamy and team have come up with a single track titled Kannodu Kanneere, which throws light on preventing suicides. Vignesh tells CE, “We released the song some time ago. I have been noticing the increase in suicide rates in the city and wanted to share a message with the society. The song is about four minutes and eight seconds long. I have directed the video and Sidhartha Mohan of Charles Shafiq Karthiga (CSK) (2015) fame has done the background score and music.”

Ask him why a video song, but not a film, and he explains, “A film or documentary might become a bit preachy, so we thought of doing a song. People here cannot relate to depression. Despite a lot of awareness, there remains no coordinated effort to address suicide. No matter what, suicide is preventable. We need just a moment of hope, which can change our fate.”
While the lyrics have been written by Ra Salim, Ak Aayutha Ezhuthu, and B Mac Masta Mind, Vignesh says that the whole video is broken into four parts — the moment, depression, aggression and moving on. “Suicide doesn’t take away your pain; you just give the burden to someone else,” he adds.

Interestingly, the video has been shot with a double exposure technique. What’s that? “It’s a way of exposing the same photographic fame or strip of a film twice to light in order to superimpose one composition over the other,” he explains. He says that promoting positive mental health is the need of the hour. “Our lives are precious and as human beings, we need to respect and value them.”
