P Chinnapillai honoured with Avvaiyar award

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday honoured P Chinnapillai (66) from Madurai district, who has been working for the uplift of rural women for over three decades.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday honoured P Chinnapillai (66) from Madurai district, who has been working for the uplift of rural women for over three decades, by presenting her the Tamil Nadu government’s Avvaiyar award for the current year.  She received the award which carries `1 lakh, a gold medal, a citation and a shawl.  

The award has been instituted to encourage women who are excelling in social reforms, women’s development, communal harmony, arts, science, culture, journalism and administration, etc.

Chinnapillai hails from Pilluserry in Madurai district. She has been leading Kalanjiam SHG for women for a long time. She is responsible for the creation of as many as 2,589 SHGs for the benefit of women.
Besides, she has engaged herself in conducting free medical camps, cultivating vegetables using organic farming, planting saplings, etc.

In 2,000, Prime Minister AB Vajpayee, while presenting Stree Shakti Puraskar award to her, touched her feet as a mark of reverence for her social service. Receiving the award, Chinnapillai thanked the CM.
