NEW DELHI: The number of polling stations in the city has gone up to 14,947 from 13,033 after rationalisation under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.
The number of polling-station locations in the city, which has 70 Assembly constituencies, has also increased from 2,696 to 2,856, according to a statement issued by the Delhi chief electoral officer’s (CEO) office on Monday.
The rationalisation exercise was undertaken after the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to reduce the limit on the number of electors per polling station from 1,500 to 1,200 in view of voters’ convenience.
The northeast Delhi district now has the highest number of 1,829 polling stations at 321 locations after rationalisation, while New Delhi has the least number of polling stations at 214 among the 13 districts in the national capital.
Additional voters have been shifted to adjacent (newly-created) polling stations to bring their numbers below 1,200 per polling station, the statement said. The northeast district, which had 1,585 polling stations earlier, has the highest number of polling stations after rationalisation at 1,829.
The number of polling-station locations in the district has also risen from 295 to 321. The southeast district has 1,564 polling stations now, the east 1,543, the west 1,543 and the northwest 1,403. northeast (321) also tops the list in terms of polling-station locations, followed by west (316), East (276), southeast(264) and southwest (252).
The number of polling stations in New Delhi, however, remains the same at 87, though that of polling stations in the district has increased from 208 to 214. The polling-station-location number rose by two in Old Delhi and three in uuter Delhi. The number of polling-station locations is the same as before rationalisation in the Central, Central North and New Delhi districts.
47L voters to be out
Under the SIR exercise, more than 47 lakh voters out of 1.45 crore are going to be removed from the draft rolls. The enumeration forms of these voters were marked as “uncollectable”, according to state election commission.
